Making Music...Building Better Lives

Youth Jazz Guild

The Richmond Youth Jazz Guild was created by Jazz composer, pianist and entrepreneur Ashby Anderson as a way to bring Jazz back into the lives of youth in the Richmond Metropolitan area. Its goals are to develop life skills through character development and creative thinking and problem solving skills. The guild also seeks to pass on the Jazz tradition to the next generation while building a positive future for children through the experience of playing music.

Anderson has been awarded the 2008 Jazz Composition Fellowship from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, his original work, "The Historic Richmond Jazz Suite", has been commissioned by Meet the Composer USA and he has received honorable mention in the 2004 International Song Competition. Anderson's performances and compositions are outstanding and serve as an excellent example of hard work, practice and dedication for today’s youth.
In 2006, Anderson envisioned a place were musicians could rehearse, perform, teach and create new music. In 2008, that vision was realized as the Muse Creative Workspace, a 5000 sq. ft. facility in Shockoe Bottom that does just that.
