Celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month by stepping back in time and going to a Harlem Rent Party. Join us on Friday, April 17, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. at Muse Creative Workspace (6N 19th Street Richmond, VA 23223) for an evening of jazz, salsa lessons and more!
Rent Parties were a way for Harlemites in the 1920s and 1930s to pay their rent. Hosts would hire musicians, cook food and with the proceeds have money to cover their rent.
The JCA, Jazz Composers Alliance, Inc invites you to participate in this tradition of Jazz and at the same time support the JAZZ MENTORS PROJECT. The JAZZ MENTORS PROJECT provides jazz education, mentorship, and instruments for aspiring young musicians in Richmond, ages 8 to 18. All proceeds from the Rent Party go directly to this project. Youth Jazz Guild

The Richmond Youth Jazz Guild was created by Jazz composer, pianist and entrepreneur Ashby Anderson as a way to bring Jazz back into the lives of youth in the Richmond Metropolitan area. Its goals are to develop life skills through character development and creative thinking and problem solving skills. The guild also seeks to pass on the Jazz tradition to the next generation while building a positive future for children through the experience of playing music.

Anderson has been awarded the 2008 Jazz Composition Fellowship from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, his original work, "The Historic Richmond Jazz Suite", has been commissioned by Meet the Composer USA and he has received honorable mention in the 2004 International Song Competition. Anderson's performances and compositions are outstanding and serve as an excellent example of hard work, practice and dedication for today’s youth.
In 2006, Anderson envisioned a place were musicians could rehearse, perform, teach and create new music. In 2008, that vision was realized as the Muse Creative Workspace, a 5000 sq. ft. facility in Shockoe Bottom that does just that. SUMMER JAZZ BOOT CAMP

GET IMMERSED IN JAZZ
This ten-day jazz workshop is open to musicians of all skill levels, ages 10 - 18, offering an immersion in jazz music and improvisation. Musicians in the areas of brass, woodwind, piano, bass and drums are all encouraged to participate. Students will be instructed by professional musicians from the Jazz Composers Alliance, Inc. Programming includes jazz ensemble training, improvisational theory and technique, master classes, jazz history and “jam sessions”. Tuition for the Summer Jazz Boot Camp is $220.
